Easy Homemade Tandoori Chicken Recipe

Tandoori Chicken- Easy homemade recipe

Tandoori chicken is a popular Indian dish known for its flavorful and aromatic marinade, typically cooked in a tandoor (clay oven). However, you can make delicious tandoori chicken at home using your oven or grill. Here's a basic recipe:

Ingredients:

For the Marinade:

- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or 8 bone-in chicken pieces (like thighs or drumsticks)

- 1 cup plain yogurt

- 2 tablespoons lemon juice

- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

- 2 tablespoons tandoori masala spice mix (readily available at stores or homemade)

- 1 tablespoon ground cumin

- 1 tablespoon ground coriander

- 1 tablespoon paprika

- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric

- 1 teaspoon ground ginger

- 1 teaspoon ground garlic

- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste for spiciness)

- Salt to taste

For Garnish (optional):

- Fresh cilantro leaves

- Lemon wedges

- Sliced red onion

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Marinade:

   - In a large bowl, combine yoghurt, lemon juice, vegetable oil, tandoori masala, ground cumin, ground coriander, paprika, ground turmeric, ground ginger, ground garlic, cayenne pepper, and salt. Mix well to create a smooth marinade.

2. Marinate the Chicken:

   - Make shallow cuts or slashes in the chicken pieces. This will help the marinade penetrate the meat.

   - Place the chicken in the marinade and coat each piece thoroughly. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid.

   - Refrigerate and marinate for at least 2 hours, or ideally overnight for the best flavour.

3. Preheat Your Grill or Oven:

   - If using an oven, preheat it to the highest broil setting (usually around 500°F or 260°C). You can also use a grill preheated to medium-high heat.

4. Skewer or Arrange the Chicken:

   - If using skewers, thread the marinated chicken pieces onto metal or soaked wooden skewers.

   - If using an oven, you can place the chicken pieces on a wire rack set over a baking sheet to allow excess marinade to drip away.

5. Cooking the Chicken:

   - Grill Method: Grill the chicken skewers for about 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and has charred edges. Cooking time may vary depending on your grill and the size of the chicken pieces.

   - Oven Method: Place the chicken on the top rack of the oven and broil for 15-20 minutes, turning the chicken halfway through, until the chicken is fully cooked and slightly charred.

6. Serve:

   - Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves, lemon wedges, and sliced red onion if desired.

   - Serve the tandoori chicken hot with naan, rice, or your favourite side dishes.

Enjoy your homemade tandoori chicken! You can also serve it with mint chutney or yoghurt sauce for extra flavour.
